About Us

At Fenrir & Cerberus, we do something about our dangerous world – raising, training and sustaining real dogs that protect your way of life. Dogs have been part of human societies for thousands of years. The first dogs were domesticated by hunter-gatherer humans within a symbiotic framework. We think it is best to keep that framework as the foundation upon which we build a multi-faceted relationship with our dogs. Dogs that lose their purposes in human societies tend to pose challenges for their handlers or caregivers.
Our K9s are controlled, focused and determined. They are verum canibus – real dogs that are balanced in all three primordial drives of defence, prey and social. We do not profess to teach a dog to bite or sniff out odours; it instinctively knows how to. Our training methods, therefore, differ from convention rooted in pet training or dog sports. Our philosophy in training is to guide the dog to achieve excellence; the dog itself is pushing for excellence, humans have minimal input – Active Dog, Reactive Human.
And that is why our K9s can exist as family pets one moment and morph into a fearsome protector the next. They are independent beings brought up to assess the situation, to identify friend or foe and act on their assessment.
They are not fur missiles (we hate this nickname by the way) because that label implies that they are simply weapons to be launched and cause destruction. Fur missiles cannot go into civilian homes after retirement, our K9s can.
Leo Tamaki, world renowned Aikido master, explained why Aikido experts are not seen participating in MMA fights: “It’s (MMA) a ritual fight. It is the same as two deer locking their antlers. The stronger one will reproduce, and the other one will go and jerk off. In a survival fight, a deer will attack a wolf from the side and puncture its soft belly as fast as possible.” It is the same analogy between us and dog sports. Dogs that are brought up using sport dog training methods see the equipment as a prey item. They are conditioned to play the game of “tug” to win the prey item. The assailant loses the jacket or sleeve the sport dog carries its “trophy” off to the side. Our dogs engage in survival fights. Therefore, they go all out and never say die until the assailant truly capitulates.
A police working dog conditioned to ritualistic competition biting the flailing t-shirt of suspect rather than the suspect himself. Police tactical capability degraded through unrealistic and sport dog training methods. The working K9 was supposedly an asset to the team, but is now a liability.
